About

Hey everyone! It's taken me a while to realise, but this blog lacks any sort of information about me in one place. I'm Vanessa (call me Ness if you want), a 6'1.5" professional treehugger from Melbourne. I move where the work takes me, and so far that has included country Victoria, Adelaide, and country NSW. I always wanted to live somewhere different for a while, and I guess now I have. I am well and truly sick of packing on a weekly basis, and hanker for a time when I will be able to call just one place home, white picket fence, hubby and kids, dog and vegie garden included, but for now that's just not possible.

I blog about my life. It sounds quite self-indulgent, it's true, but ME is the only topic upon which I am an expert! Things that are very ME include baking (and cooking in general, of course), travel (when I have saved enough cash and annual leave), and, more recently, as I become aware that my best chance at a long and fruitful life, health and fitness.

Health and fitness is quite a late entry on my list and not one ever likely to take the spotlight, because I suffer from a congenital heart condition called Long QT Syndrome and can't flog myself or take big physical risks like I would like to. Climbing Everest was never on my bucket list, but making Base Camp was. It's an electrical fault that can cause my heart not to beat properly, and one that I try not to rule my life... but I do have to constantly deal with fear, which is tiring to say the least.

About a year ago I also started on my 101 Things challenge (and blogged about it), which is 101 things to do in 1001 days. Foolishly, three of the components actually equated to doing nearly forty individual things (reading a book or baking a batch of cupcakes being amongst them), and some of them are bigger than Ben-Hur, but I remain confident that I will get there sooner or later. Hopefully before the 1001 days are up, anyhow! I have ploughed through most of those multi-faced tasks so now I can focus more on crossing the individual ones off.

I would like to become a better baker/cook/cake decorator. I love making new friends from across the globe, which is a major drawcard to the blogging process. I would like to be a better blogger with a better blog, but life gets in the way and I will almost always favour heading down the pub for a parma with the boys from work over sitting at home and e-socialising. I need to improve my technological skills otherwise by the time I have kids I'll be one of those mums who can't program the VCR (or whatever the equivalent of their generation will be... I'm showing my age already, aren't I...). I want to be fitter and healthier. I want to be more knowledgable, more skillful, more organised. I want to be better travelled, and not just in a superficial way; I want to experience the world, not just travel it. I want to be one of those people who have really interesting stories to tell and talents to offer. I want to be a better writer.

Come to think of it, I want to be better at EVERYTHING I do. I'd like to be a better person in general. But I guess I'm going to have to pick my battles if I want to achieve that balance of living and well-rested!

Anyway, I'm glad you found your way here and are interested enough to click through and learn about me. If you have any questions or comments or want to say hi, just drop me a line at theinsignificantdetails [at] gmail [dot] com. I FINALLY have a Twitter account - @nessalillian (someone had already used my usual handle of vanessalillian, dangit! But serves me right for being technologically slow. Yep, I'm the girl who bought a Discman even though iPods were on the market...). No FB page yet but I'm sure it's not far off.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my blog!

  3. Great meeting you too, Skye! BBC was really valuable for me, too, and I'm looking forward to sitting down and implementing the things that I learnt there. It's kind of exciting going forward!

  4. I'm a tree-hugger too. But I stopped growing at 4'11! But I suppose we'll still get along just fine ;)

I don't know if you do the whole awards thing, but I have nominated you for a Seriously! What a Great Blog! Award. They're cute, usually fun, and it can bring more traffic to your blog, if you're interested!

    Here's the link (copy-and-past) http://atinycupoftea.blogspot.com/2013/03/catch-up-blog.html

    1. Okay, that's strange - I replied to this over a week ago!

One of my aunts (not by blood) is under 5', which means that my cousins on that side are all tiny. Their wedding photos, with my brother and I in the background, are hilarious.

Thanks for the award :) I'll go check it out now, even though the horse has probably bolted.
